Description
Learn to make this easy homemade flan recipe for a silky smooth texture and rich caramel sauce. This classic flan dessert uses sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract for an authentic Mexican flan with a luscious custard base. Perfect for special occasions or as a make-ahead dessert.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 4 large eggs
- 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
- 1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Make the caramel: In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Stop stirring and let it simmer until it turns a deep amber color. Carefully pour the hot caramel into a 9-inch round baking dish or individual ramekins. Swirl to coat the bottom.
- Prepare the custard: In a blender or bowl, whisk together eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. This will be your flan custard.
- Pour the custard mixture over the caramel in the baking dish or ramekins.
- Bake in a water bath: Place the baking dish or ramekins in a larger baking pan. Carefully pour hot water into the larger pan, reaching about halfway up the sides of the flan dish.
- Bake for 45-60 minutes for a large flan, or 30-40 minutes for individual ramekins, or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
- Cool and chill: Remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool completely at room temperature. Then, cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
- Serve: To unmold, run a thin knife around the edge of the flan. Place a serving plate over the flan dish and carefully invert. The flan should slide out onto the plate with the caramel sauce pooling around it.
Notes
- For an extra smooth flan, strain the custard mixture before pouring it into the caramel.
- If you prefer a less sweet flan, you can reduce the amount of sweetened condensed milk slightly.
- Experiment with flavorings like cinnamon or citrus zest in your flan custard.
