Description

Texas Tamale Pie is a hearty dish with a savory ground beef filling and a creamy cornmeal topping. It combines the flavors of Tex-Mex cuisine in a comforting and easy-to-make casserole.

Ingredients

  • Ground beef: 1 pound
  • Onion: 1 medium, chopped
  • Black beans: 1 (15-ounce) can, rinsed and drained
  • Diced tomatoes with green chilies: 1 (10-ounce) can
  • Chili powder: 2 tablespoons
  • Cumin: 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cornmeal: 1 cup
  • Milk: 1 cup
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Shredded cheddar cheese: 1 cup
  • Sliced black olives (optional): 1/4 cup
  • Chopped fresh cilantro: 2 tablespoons

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is browned and the onion is soft (about 5-7 minutes). Drain any excess fat.
  3. Stir in the black beans, diced tomatoes with green chilies, chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, milk, and egg. Mix until smooth.
  5. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Pour half of the cornmeal mixture into the dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Layer the beef mixture over the cornmeal.
  7. Pour the remaining cornmeal mixture on top.
  8. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese and black olives over the top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set.
  10. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef.
  • Adjust the amount of chili powder based on your spice preference.
  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with Monterey Jack or pepper jack for a different flavor.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or corn to the beef mixture.
