Description

Indulge in the delightful fusion of flavors with this Double Chocolate Sourdough Bread. The tangy essence of sourdough perfectly complements the richness of chocolate, creating a moist and decadent loaf that’s ideal for breakfast or an afternoon treat. With its beautiful crust and soft interior, this homemade bread is an irresistible snack that invites you to savor each slice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¾ cup lukewarm water

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the active sourdough starter with lukewarm water until bubbly.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  3. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the starter mixture using a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Transfer to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise at room temperature for about 4 hours or until doubled in size.
  6. Gently deflate the dough on a floured surface, fold in chocolate chips, and shape into a loaf.
  7. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow when tapped.

Notes

  • Swap out dark chocolate for milk chocolate for a sweeter loaf.
  • Add nuts like walnuts or hazelnuts for extra crunch.
  • Swirl in peanut butter for a delightful twist.
  • Allow dough to rise in a warm place for optimal fermentation.
  • Do not rush the kneading process; it develops gluten for better texture.
  • Adding extra chocolate chips on top before baking creates a decadent crust.
  • Store leftover double chocolate sourdough bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days.
  • For longer storage, freeze slices wrapped in plastic wrap.
  • Toast or microwave slightly to warm stored bread.
